I woke up around 5:30 that morning with the hopes of seeing a classic Smoky Mountain sunrise from the top of Clingman's Dome, but the weather didn't want to cooperate that day. It wasn't foggy-- we were in the middle of a cloud.
So I got back in the truck and started driving towards the exact opposite side of the park: Cades Cove. Once we were able to get below the clouds, the misty rain created a smoky haze that helped to saturate the early fall colors.
The rain also helped keep most of the other tourists in bed.
